MT. KAILASH claimed to be the apex of the Hindu religious axis is also one of the highest mountain in Tibet at 22,022 feet, and Lake Manasarovar at 14,950 feet is said to be the highest fresh water lake in the world. As per Hindu belief Mt Kailash is the eternal and permanent abode of Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati. Manasarovar is believed to be created by Lord Brahma from his joyful tears. In the Buddhist, Jain , Bonpo and Hindu religion Mt Kailash is regarded as the most sacred and is believed to be the navel of the universe. Mt. Kailash (6,741m) situated to the north of the Himalaya in Western Tibet (China) is perhaps the most sacred place together with the two lakes of Manasarovar & Raksas. Three of the greatest rivers the Brahmaputra, the Sutlej, the Indus all take their sources from this Holy Mountain. Over the centuries pilgrims have constantly journeyed immense distances to achieve enlightenment or cleanse themselves of sin, braving enormous distances and particularly harsh weather. |
